A mere amateur art monkey in 1985, Dave worked simultaneously at two newspapers. Busier than a monkey at a banana plantation, between 1985 and 1989, he earned 3 awards for Editorial Cartooning from intercollegiate and professional journalism competitions, and illustrated and art directed hundreds of newspaper illustrations. Believing he’d be a comic strip art monkey for his career, he tripped into comic books instead.
From 1991-1994, Dave freelanced as a letterer and part-time inker for several companies, before getting called up to the upper vines at world famous
COMICRAFT. Through 1999, he climbed to 2nd banana status at their studio, setting his pawprint in books like
WILDC.A.T.s/X-MEN, JIM LEE’S FANTASTIC FOUR, and DANGER GIRL, for every company from ACCLAIM to DC to MARVEL to
WILDSTORM. It’s guessed he lettered over 17,000 pages in the years there!
In 1999, with a new appeal for story telling, Dave became a storyboard art monkey, working with storytelling 800-pound-gorilla SONY ANIMATION. A run on PBS' DRAGON TALES still wows little chimps today! But crabby curmudgeon MAXINE kept the cheeky monkey in check on HALLMARK'S MAXINE'S CHRISTMAS CAROL. (You know Maxine -- the sunglasses, the bunny slippers, the sharp tongue, the cool dog...)
From 1999 until 2004, he created and art directed the Lettering Department at CROSSGEN ENTERTAINMENT! As CGE's Design Director, he contributed to the book designs
(CROSSGEN CHRONICLES' GENERATOR, CROSSGEN PRIMER, and CROSSGENESIS), the page designs (each Story So Far pages, letter columns, and company news), production development for the ground-breaking digital innovation COMICS ON THE WEB, and thousands of pages of lettering for the bunch of great books that came out through 2004 (MYSTIC, SIGIL, SCION, MERIDIAN, RUSE, WAY OF THE RAT, THE PATH,
BRATH, SOLUS…to name a few!). Multi-award nominations came from WIZARD, COMIC BUYER'S GUIDE, and countless internet sites.
Now, the CEO (Chimp
Extra-Ordinaire) of the year-old ARTMONKEYS! works from the world-renowned ArtMonkeys compound in steamy Florida, tools digital fonts in his foundry, letters rafts of books sold nationally, crafts digital illustrations for pop media outlets, and creates new original digital content for
www.ArtMonkeys.com! With his pack of fellow ArtMonkeys, he blows the creative bubble of Pop Culture bigger and brighter!
